1851 and 1861 censuses for Hartest, 1861 for Boxted and Glemsford produce the following:
JAMES DEBENHAM lived with his wife ELIZA, in Hartest, Suffolk, at Wick. JAMES was aged 46 in 1851, born around 1805 in Hartest. ELIZA, aged 40 in 1851, was born around 1811 at Cockfield in Suffolk. Their children, all born in Hartest were:
Harriet b 1837/8 a silk throwster in 1851, working in a silk mill in 1861.
Ursula b 1839/40 a silk throwster in 1851not at home in 1861.
Walterb 1841/2 an agricultural labourer in 1851 not at home in 1861.
Emily b 1843/4 a silk winder in 1861
Charlotteb 1844/5not mentioned in 1861 (could also be Elizabeth, below)
Elizabeth not mentioned in 1851, a silk winder in 1861
JOHNb 1st quarter 1847not at home in 1861
Sarah b 1849/50
Charlesb 1851 (aged 1 week at 1851census)
Maria b 1854/5 a scholar in 1861
Also in Hartest in 1851 and 1861 were: James Debenham born 1783, a farmer of 98 acres employing three men and two boys, with his wife Ruth; Noah Debenham born 1801, a master shoemaker employing one man, his wife Emily, a dressmaker, and their family (living in Boxted in 1861); Robert Debenham, born 1807, a journeyman blacksmith (not at home in 1851), his wife Mary born 1804, laundress, with their son; James Debenham, born 1810, a master shoemaker in 1851, a game dealer and jobbing butcher by 1861, with his wife Sarah and their family; James Debenham, born 1813, a master shoemaker, his wife Mary born 1801(not in 1851 see note below), George Debenham, born 1815, an agricultural labourer (farm bailiff in 1861), his wife Harriet and family, Alfred Debenham born 1828, a master shoemaker employing two men, with his wife Elizabeth and family (son of Noah). Nearly all were born in Hartest. This includes a total of four James Debenhams'. In neighbouring Glemsford in 1861 were John Debenham born 1810, a silk weaver and his children, and William Debenham, born 1823, a bricklayer, his wife Sarah a velvet cutter and their family, all born in Glemsford. Sarah Debenham, born 1780, in Glemsford, was in Sudbury Workhouse in 1861.A John William James Debenham was born on 3rd July, 1859 at 102 Drummond Street, Euston Square. He was the son of James Debenham, a Boot Maker (Master) and Harriet Debenham (formerly Cole) ©. I suspect that Harriet died in childbirth, and James moved back to Hartest, where he remarried Mary (above).
