Thank you very much for the info! I had
searched the Kansas State Census and Federal
Census for Norton Co., KS at our local lib-
rary, but I must have rolled right past the
1900 census entry for the Deboard family in
a microfilm reader induced trance!
Here is some info I do have:
John Shadlaw, b. June 1837, VA, d. 1923, bur.
Norton City Cem., Norton, KS.
Rhoda Maddy, b. 6/9/1840, Black Swamp, Henry
Co., IN. They were wed 9/10/1857, most
likely, Henry Co., IN.
The couple and family are found in the 1860
and 1870 census of Henry Co., IN. I have
not yet checked the 1880 census for Henry
Co., IN, but it is quite likely they will be
there when I do.
John Shadlaw, signed a homestead claim for
40 acres near Calvert, KS on 7/12/1894 and
filed on that claim, 8/13/1904. He is listed
in the Plat Book of Norton County, Kansas in
1900 and the Standard Atlas of Norton County,
Kansas, Including a Plat Book, 1917. John
and Sarah and family are recorded in the
1900, 1920 census of Norton Co., KS (the
1910 is practically illegible in many places)
They are also listed in the 1905, Kansas
State Census for Norton Co., KS.
The marriage register for Norton, KS does
have a listing for the marriage licence
for John J. Deboard and Veletia Shadlaw,
dated 5/19/1901, but there is no notation
concerning Calvert, KS. I would be interes-
ted to know how you learned of Calvert.
Probate records at the Norton Co., court-
house are not at all helpful regarding the
Deboards. In 1925 Rhoda Maddy Shadlaw,s
estate was settled. One entry claims
"Feletta DeBoard", address unknown. However,
later that same year an entry claims "Mrs.
John DeBord" had signed for her inheritance
check. No address was given.
There are no Deboards bur. in Norton City
Cem. and none elsewhere in the county as
best as I can tell.
Veletia Shadlaw was the seventh child of
John Shadlaw and Rhoda Maddy.
I have seen the name spelled Shadlaw, Shadlow
One of her sisters wed in and remained in
Newcastle, Henry Co., IN.
Rhoda Maddy was an aunt to my G-Grandfather,
James Alderson Maddy. James homesteaded in
Norton Co., KS prior to the arrival of the
Shadlaws. My father and brother still farm
the original claim plus additional land. I
my self have spent many countless hours on
a tractor working that land.
Conversations with my elder relatives in the
area shed no light on the Deboard's fate.
As to "Ina DeBorde" b. 6/17/1902, Mascot,
Harlan NE, I suspect Mascot is a defunct
town in Harlan Co., KS which borders Norton
Co., KS. I will check cemetery listings
and census records for Harlan Co., NE.
I do have one question. How on earth were
you able to acess the 1900 census for Norton
Co., KS so quickly? To my knowledge there
is no index for that census for the state of
Kansas. You must remember I have been online
a total of about two weeks, and although I
knew computers were supposed to have revol-
utionized genealogy I had no idea info could
be transfered that fast!
Well, thanks again for your assistance
and best to you and yours.
