He was the last of the male De Bohun line and died at the age of 31 in mysterious circumstances. It is thought that King Edward III had Humphrey secretly hanged. Rumours abounded that, during his service in France, he was involved in the supposed poisoning of the 3rd Earl of Warwick.

His younger daughter Mary was the mother of King Henry V.
