I have some conflicting info on this line; both sets of info came from individuals that I consider to be careful and reliable sources. The first set is similar to what you posted above and similar to the Ancestral File data for Benjamin. Here's the second version. John Sturgill (s/o of James Sturgill and Mary Herrin) b 15 Nov 1813 in VA m1 to Jane Debord (25 Nov 1815- 13 Apr 1854) on 17 Apr 1839 in Ashe Co NC.Jane died 13 Apr 1854 and then John Sturgill married Jane's younger sister Mary Debord(1825-1882). John died 17 Aug 1882 and Mary also died in 1882; both are buried in the South Fork Cem in Alleghany Co.
The 9 Oct 1851 date is when Benjamin Deboard wrote his will deeding his property to his children in exchange for lifetime maintenance for him and his wife.I've been told there were 15 to 20 changes to the will (I believe they called these cocidils; I don't know when or if the will was probated but probably sometime in the 1870's. Has anyone tried to get a copy of the will and cocidils.I'm not sure I could afford the reproduction costs (grin); but it must be a storehose of info. I know it does name his eldest son Jacob, sons William and Benjamin Jr; and 3 daughters Jane, Mary and Nancy.Benjamin Debord age 88 and Polly age 75 show on the 1860 Ashe census; then Benjamin age 87 shows with Benjamin Jr age 40 on the 1870 Alleghany Co census; Mary Deboard age 82 shows on the 1870 census with her daughter John and Mary Sturgill. The census records are not consistent on the age for this couple.
