Portrait of Antoinette Decuir (1826-1896), New Orleans, Louisiana

The August 2010 issue of MAINE ANTIQUE DIGEST magazine on p.2-D pictures a portrait of Antoinette Decuir (1726-1896), very probably of New Orleans, Louisiana. No further genealogical information is given about this woman in the article in the magazine. It does, however, note that the French artist who painted this portrait, Jacques Guillaume Lucien Amans, was actively painting in New Orleans from 1836-56 during which time this young woman was alive and of a fitting age. The portrait was sold at the May 22-23, 2010, auction of the Neal Auction Company, New Orleans, Louisiana.

This portrait is printed in black and white only on newsprint paper in the magazine cited so it is far from a perfect reproduction of the original painting, which was undoubtedly in color. Nevertheless, it is a portrait of Antoinette Decuir and would probably be very important to you if you were one of her descendants.

In case you can no longer purchase a copy of this issue or are unable to find it in your local public library (remember to take along your camera), I am scanning this portrait for any of Antoinette Decuir's family descendants and researchers who might like a copy sent freely by email. Just imagine if there were a portrait in existence of one of your ancestors before the age of photography, and you did not know of it. That would, indeed, be a very great shame and injustice, which is why Iím scanning this portrait and posting about it. Someone in the Decuir family ought to have a copy of this portrait.

My email address can be found by clicking on my underlined name above. Please note that there is a period between my first and last name and between the two words in the second half of my address. Also, please email me directly to my email address rather than respond to me on this website as I might not see that response here.

If it were a portrait of a 19th century Pease young lady in my family line, I'd certainly hope someone would do the same for me. Call it a simple, but appropriate, genealogical good deed.
