Joanie,
Glad to hear from you, I live in Seadrift. My Dad was Bernie, and Lane was my Uncle and knew his daughter, Myrtle who married Bob Thormalen.
Tom our cousin (named after uncle Tom) also lives here.He is a son of Albert one of the brothers.(I also found an Albert Deforest born in Stratford, CT in 1827, could this be a relation and one that Uncle Albert may have been named after? who knows??)
I don't know how much info you have accumulated but I have also accumulated some, but may duplicate some of yours.Like you I have been stymied by John Lane (Great grandfather).I have found a L. Deforest that immigrated to U.S. in 1824 and have the entry number and etc.It would be handy if I could access the immigration records but don't know where to start? There was also a Johanna Deforest that immigrated on May 12, 1836, but she was 2 years old and there are no other names accompanying her (an orphan????) or was someone meeting her????.Also in the DeFreest/DeForest/DeForeest geneology, I struggled through it (160pages) and found two possibilities of individuals being born around 1835 with first name John (no middle names or initials) but stops there with no other info other than siblings.I had thought about contacting the person that maintains that database to see if there is any kind of documentation with more info?
Tom keeps telling me that it was passed down that the Texas branch originated with someone floating ashore on a barrell?? haha.Don't know how much truth there is to that, but I believe that Dad also mentioned that.
I would like to know how John Lane wound up in Port Arthur area (Jefferson County) and married Lucretia, a fourteen year old!.I found her and her mother and brother listed in the 1850 census for Jefferson County, but how did they wind up here with Thomas Jefferson being born on Matagorda Island in 1857 and John Robert in Calhoun County???? in 1859 assuming the location is correct? (Calhoun county could have been the Island also.Aransas county was not created until the 1870's (came out of Refugio co.).
