Hi Joan --

I was searching for information on George C. Defrees, when I happened to read your post on this site:

My wife recently came back from an antique store in in Nashville after buying a pair of beautiful old portraits last year of a man and woman. I was hanging them up in our home when I noticed the backs had a faded inscription:

Mr. and Mrs. George C Defrees, painted by J. J. Bisbee, 1863.

I used google to look for the name, and ran across your note, mentioning his wife, Amanda. The portrait of the wife also has an inscription that is considerably faded, but probably reads "Amanda," so I guess I have the right people. They are very fine portraits, and we are not trying to sell them, but I am sure any family would be interested in knowing what they look like. I would be interested in learning more about George and Amanda Defrees, and would be happy to email you a picture of the portraits, if you are interested.

Thanks for your posted message! -- Jim Davison
