DeFrees/DeFries/LeFross ??

Hello, everyone . . . I'm sort of going down a rabbit trail here. I'm wondering if one of our surnames, LeFross, is really DeFries or DeFrees. Family oral history is that we have a French connection with my great, great grandmother - unknown first name, last name LeFross. They even named one of their sons LeFross. But I've asked on French list serves and no one has heard of this name. We know there is at least one Native American connection, and, I think, possibly a Melungon connection. I'm wondering if the elusive Miss LeFross (DeFries?) was really a member of the Ramapo Indian group. Has anyone found anything at all along these lines? Does this make sense to anyone?
