Deagan is not the most common of Irish names, but it has been recognized as an Irish name with Gaelic roots.

Deegan (it is necessary to note that there are numerous variations in the spelling of this name) is listed in THE SUPPLEMENT TO IRISH FAMILIES as an anglicized form of the Gaelic-irish name O'Duibhginn. According to Smith in the DICTIONARU OF AMERICAN NAMES, Deegan, Degan, Deagan are all forms of one name meaning the grandson of Dubhceann which means black head.
