Degan's of Ireland,NJ and KS
Posted by: Ken McCracken Date: June 19, 2000 at 05:36:38
  of 87

Looking for any information on the Degan's who settled in Atchison, Kansas from 1850 until 1875.

In the Atchison Cemetery there are over 30 Degan's buried here. The tombstones inscriptions suggests they were Irish Catholics who came from New York area and Ireland to work the railroads and farm.

It appears as if many left Atchison for the rail centers of Omaha, NE, St Joseph, MO and Ft. Worth, TX.

There is a Degan School in Lewisville, Texas.

There also are several criminal cases against a John Degan in the Western District of Arkansas (Oklahoma Indian Territory)from the late 1880's.

Any information on the Degan's who be appreciated.
