Lyle,
The connection between Syracuse, NY and Lowell MI comes from the obituary of my gr-gr-grandfather, Henry DeGan (b. about 1835 in Canada). He died in Sept 1891 and after the normal obituary stuff it says "Syracuse (NY) and Lowell (Mich) papers please copy".

Now I know from Federal Census data that Henry was a stone cutter and lived in Syracuse from at least 1850 until he left with his family for Chicago, IL between 1862-1865.

The 1850 census shows Henry is the oldest child still at home, but the 1840 census shows three older sisters. These would have been the three oldest daughters of Saraphan Degan and his wife Adaline (unknown last name). Unfortunately the 1840 census does not list family member names. However, based on the Adelia Mary Degan's age and origins, it is consistent with the information I have.

So it could be that Adelia Mary Degan was Henry Degan's older sister, one of the first three daughters of Saraphan and Adaline.

Dave DeGan
