I am not a researcher of this surname however I came across Sherriff's Sales announcements in an old newspaper and felt it might be of some use to someone out there who is researching this surname. I saw your post and felt you may find this info relevant to your families.

The name of the newspaper was "Adams Centinel(Gettysburg, Pennsylvania) Wednesday, Sept. 8 1819. The announcement is as follows:

"Sheriff's Sales.
Will Be Sold,
In pursuance of Writs of Alias Venditioni Exponas, issuing out of the Court of Common Pleas of Adams county, and to me directed on Tuesday the 21st of September inst. at the Court-house in the borough of Gettysburg, the following REAL PROPERTY, viz.

..............[other people's announcements which preceded]

situated on Baltimore street south of the Courthouse, in the borough of Gettysburg. Seized and taken under Execution as the ESTATE OF JAMES DEGROFF.
John Arendt, Sheriff.
Sheriff's Office, Gettysburg
Sept. 1

Could this be why they went to Ohio?
