Edward Arthur "Rube" De Groff
Posted by: Todd De Groff Date: July 07, 1998 at 14:33:26
  of 193

I just discovered this bulletin board and I must say I'm blown away!
I've traced my line back to Jean LeConte (actually, my great-grandfather did this for his Holland Society application back in the 1890's), and I have some info on other lines, all of which I would be delighted to share.
BTW, if anyone has a relative who belonged to the Holland Society, I suggest you contact the Society and get a copy of the relative's application. Applicants are required to trace their lineage back to 1674, before New Amsterdam fell to the British and became New York, so the applications are a "canned" family history.

In any event, my specific question involves Edward Arthur "Rube" De Groff, the only person w/ the De Groff surname to have played major league baseball. His brief playing career w/ St. Louis (ironic, if the De Groff/Le Conte line really goes back to Louis IX!) ca. 1915 is listed in the Baseball Encyclopedia and Total Baseball.
Rube was born in Hyde Park, NY, ca 1879 and died in Poughkeepsie ca. 1955.
Does anyone have any info about his line and descendants?
