This is not our line but I have some suggestions. First do the census work in the area where the ancestor lived. Second find him on the Ellis Island site. Usually, these mention other relatives and tel whee the person is going in the states. You may have to find a researcher in his home area to do the work in the late 1860's forward but once you have his parents , go to the LDS library for the Montefusco birth, marriage and death records.
