Starla: Most surnames are one of four classifications
1. occupation
2. place
3. physical description
4. son of servant of

An example of place is Leonardo Da Vinci ie, Leo from Vinci. DeJulio is son of or servant or vassal of.
Since every village had such occupations as Carter, Wright, Baker, etc they were usually not related unless they all came from the same place and it was a small place. All of our DeJulios were related but not so the ones from Sulmona, etc. Hope this helps you.
