Original spelling of family name is: de la Chaumette. This name is a Derivative of de la Chaumette; the first one in our family (Jean de la Chaumette) came from Rochouard, France thru England and Martinique in 1722 into Va. as wealthy tobacco growers. Jean's brother Pierre came earlier ,about 1698, and settled in Gloucester Co.,NJ; He changed his name to Peter DeLashmet; His son John went to Frederick Co.,Md & then to SC in 1768. Jean de la Chaumette changed his name to John Shumate.
