DeLeons in Illinois

Not too many of us here, but its worth a shot.
I am searching for information on my family name of DeLeon. My grandfather Harry Donald DeLeon was a terrific, loving person who spent his life in Rock Island and Moline, Illinois. My greatgrandfather was Glenn Forrest DeLeon, born April 27, 1888 in Geneseo, Illinois. His father was John DeLeon, and his mother, Minnie Wiemer.
I would like to find out anything I can about John DeLeon. He was a member of the I.O.O.F No. 172. He apparently abandoned his family around 1900, and the family from that point forward, did not discuss him. I would still like to know more about this side of my family and where it originated. I have been told that the DeLeons of my family originated from Portugal, but find nothing in any records to support that information. Any help or suggestions would be of great help.
Thank you, Rachael
