Your family story is most interesting and may hold some clues to Dell origins. This is the first I have heard of 3 brothers or entry through New Castle, DE.
I think we share a common ancestor in John Nicholas Dell Sr.You are descended from his son John Nicholas Jr. and I from his son David. Here is some of what I have found out about John Nicholas Sr. which conflicts in part with some of the early GenForum postings.
John Nicholas Dell Sr. b. c 1750 d. Feb-Mar 1815 near Warfieldsburg, Frederick (now Carroll) Co., MD. Occupation - Shoemaker of Westminster, Frederick Co. Married Eve Dorothy Yingling b. 01 Oct. 1751 d. 25 Jan 1832 near Warfieldsburg. Sources for this information, John Nicholas' will and estate papers, Eve Dorthy's estate papers, various deeds and Lydia Dell's bible.John Nicholas was a patriot and is in a list of men of signed an Oath of Fidelity.I don't know where John Nicholas came from but he shows up in Westminster about 1776 with money to buy land.If the Frederic Co. clerks copied his signature accurately, the script is Gothic. That would seem to indicate John Nicholas was German. His wife most certainly was German. The earliest records I have found are two 1776 Frederick County deeds which record John Nicholas' purchase of several lots in and around Westminster. You can find Dell deeds for Frederick/Carroll/Baltimore Counties online at MDLandRec.net. The court of equity records for his estate are on the Maryland Archives website.
John Nicholas and Eve Dorothy's 9 children as named in his will and estate papers are in order of birth Peter, John, Mary Magdalene, David, John Adam, Jacob, John Nicholas Jr., Lydia and Anna.
John Nicholas Jr. married first Tobitha Noble and second Barbara Barnhart.John Nicholas Jr. lived in Westminster and later moved to Baltimore County.Occupation: shoemaker.I do not have an exact date of death for him nor his place of burial.
Hope this is of help.
