I am not related to this family, and not researching them, however, I have a book on the Shirley family with a little information.

"Eliza Lee, the second wife of Samuel Hicks, mother of Mary Ellen Hicks Shirley was b. 28 Feb 182_ (probably 1827). Her parents were John Lee and Susanna (Demaree) Lee. Information on her ancestry is provided by a letter of 6 Feb 1930 from Robert E. Best of Lafayette, Indiana, to William C. Shirley, abstracted below:

"Samuel Demaree married, near Harrodsburg, KY, a widow Cozine whose maiden name was Mary Brewer. Their children were Daniel; Sally, captured by Indians at the age of 10 and held captive for 5 years; a son killed at the time of the capture; Mary/Polly; Susanna."

"Susanna Demaree married, first, Edward Best. Their son, Samuel Best born 1809 in Shelby County, KY, was the father of Robert Edward Best, the writer of the letter. Susanna married second, John Lee. Their children were John sho served in the Mexican War and went west, married, and died in California; James who died in childhood; Nathan who married Jane Marlott of Brookville (KY or IN); Louise (he meant Eliza) who married Samuel Hicks of Orange Co. (IN); and Margaret who married Harvey Denny of Orange Co. Susanna married third, Christopher Masters."

"Daniel Demaree, son of Samuel, married Mary Underwood who died in 1816. Their children were William Underwood Demaree; Samuel Brewer Demaree; and Nancy Ann. Daniel married second, Sarah Lee. Their children were Mary, John, Daniel, William R., James A., Nathaniel, Sarah and Henrietta."

There is further information in the book on the Hicks family.
