Denault: ComteDeBeauce,PQ>MiltonVT 1870

Francis Xavier is believed to be the son of Louis Denault, who was born about 1820, possibly in Toulon France, and an Abanaki woman who was believed to have been born in Maine. Family records show that he was born in May 1849 in St. Marie, Comte de Beauce, Quebec; but, as of July 200, many efforts to locate a record of this birth have been unsuccessful. We have visited the parish itself to secure birth records and searched indexes and records available in genealogical libraries in Burlington, Vermont, and in Manchester, New Hampshire, without success.

Milton town records confirm the dates and places of Francis Xavier's two marriages and the births of his five children, but cloud any confirmation of his own birth date: His marriage to Margaret Peppin on February 10, 1873, records him as a 24-year-old (born about 1849) and his marriage to Rosa Durand June 6, 1880, records him as a 35-year-old (born 1845). Searches the summer of 2001 will concentrate on births of any male Denaults between 1840 and 1855 in the parishes surrounding St. Marie in Comte de Beauce, Quebec.

It is theorized that Francis Xavier had a younger sister, Angleine, who was born around 1861 in Canada. Milton marriage records show that a 19-year-old Angleine Denno was married in the same Catholic church as Francis Xavier on the same day (or weekend) in June of 1880. Angeline listed her parents as Hubart and Angeline Denno, while Francis listed his parents as Louis and Angleine Denno. Angeline married Joseph Robar, the son of Ben and Angeline Robar.

We believe that Francis Xavier had a brother, or possibly a cousin, named Peter, because baptismal records from St. Anne's parish in Milton show that Francis' daughter Delia's godfather was a Peter Denault (while her godmother at the baptism in 1883 was Maria Durand, a sister/ cousin of Rosa) and Francis Xavier served as a godfather for Peter's daughter Anastasia Isadore Denault on March 6, 1889.) Vermont census records wil be consulted to locate a Peter Denault family in Milton in 1900 to find Peter's date/place of birth.

As we search for parish records of Francis Xavier in Quebec, we will expand our search for birth/baptismal records for both Angeline and Peter, as well. Searches for the marriage of the parents of the three continue as well, as many parties are very interested in confirming the Abanaki heritage of Angeline Denno, wife of Francis Xavier.

Does this family group sound familiar to anyone?

Thanks for any help,
B. Benedict
