I have some information about the Dennis family of Ulmarra in particular George Dennis who married Eliza Rebecca Hughes and their children.
George
He was born at Ulmarra in 1859 and died at Murwillumbah on 16 June 1919. Cause of death is recorded as pernicious anaemia.
George was married at Grafton when he was 23 years old and married Eliza Rebecca Hughes in 1883. The Clarence River Examiner of 21/7/1883 carried the following announcement.
“ DENNIS-HUGHES on 18th June at Ulmarra by the Rev. J. I. Bosworth. George son of John Dennis, farmer Ulmarra to Eliza Rebecca daughter of James Hughes, farmer of Deep Creek, Ulmarra.”
Eliza
Eliza Hughes was born at Wagga Wagga in 1863 and died at Kyogle on 23 August 1915; it is thought from tuberculosis Her parents were James Hughes and Elizabeth Payne. Eliza is a descendant of John Small and Mary Parker who arrived on the first fleet aboard the “Charlotte” and the “Lady Penrhyn”. Their daughter Mary Small married Mathew Hughes who arrived on the third fleet aboard the “Britannia, which sailed from Cork in 1796 and Eliza is the daughter of their son James.
Mathew Hughes had been a corporal in the Irish Militia when men under his command fired shots at a disturbance at Loughbrickland. Three men were killed and the soldiers under his command were sentenced to hang for murder. Under the laws of the time because he was the person responsible for the conduct of his men Mathew was also convicted and sentenced to hang. He was subsequently reprieved and transported for life.
BDM Records show they had 15 children
