Joseph Dennis in Lambton County, Ontario, Canada

I have been trying to piece together a Dennis family that originated in Lambton County, Ontario.

Joseph Dennis was born about 1827...census reports state three different places, either in Ontario or "Lower Canada" (Quebec), or in New York State. MOST of the census reports have recorded NYS as Joseph's place of birth. His marriage record in 1858 in Lambton County states names of his parents to be Joseph and Lucy. LDS info as user submitted has maiden name of Lucy as "Gaynott". I lean towards her being French and that this maiden name is not exactly correct. Could it be Guinette, Guenette, Ganette, or something similar? I did a search of Drouin records and cannot find a Joseph Dennis (or Denis) married to a Lucie who fits this description.

Joseph Dennis married Matilda Bertrand January 7, 1858 in Lambton County, Ontario, Canada. Matilda was the daughter of Richard Bertrand and Reine Laforge. Joseph and Matilda moved to Michigan between 1867 and 1869, and then to Washington State between 1880 and 1889. Joseph and Matilda died in 1911 and 1916 at Monroe, Snohomish, Washington and are buried together there.

Joseph and Matilda had four children:

Daughter Lucy Jane Dennis born 1859 in Lambton County, Ontario; married twice, first to Benjamin Diamond in Alpena, Michigan, USA in 1877; five known Diamond children. Second marriage after 1900 to Styrker Erickson in Washington State, one daughter Helen Erickson born 1903.

Son Joseph Richard Dennis born about 1864 in Michigan; married to Susan Pfadenhauer, 11 known children. Lived at Seattle, King County, Washington.

Son Henry James Dennis born about July 1867 in Michigan; married Hattie Hovey and had six known children; lived at Monroe, Snohomish, Washington.

Son John Dennis born about 1869; married at least twice, have no idea who his first wife was. Listed as divorced on 1910 census, cannot find him in year 1900. (Second) wife was Muriel Mullin or Mullins by whom he had two sons and a daughter who died young. Lived at Kitsap, Washington.

I have spent several days combing the internet trying to find one small clue about Joseph Dennis's family of origin and can find nothing. I cannot find him in 1851 (Canada) or 1850 USA. I have all the census info from 1861 forward and Washington State BMD info. I cannot find Richard Bertrand and family in 1851 in Canada and they should be there..is the 1851 census info for parts of Lambton County missing?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks from Nora
