Hello there! It's nice to finally meet via the internet after reading/studying a lot of your work this past year, esp. that 206-page manuscript you wrote, plus a wonderful article about our family in early New Kent County in one of the National Huguenot Society books (vol. 35, I think). You have probably done more research than all other DePriest researchers combined! :)
Anyway, I completely agree that the most likely theory is that our family arrived in Virginia with a large group of other Huguenots sometime in 1687, as you stated. What's frustrating though is that I can't find a single record of our surname (incl. DePres(s), DePrest, DuPres(s), DuPrest) in any of the ship-passenger records. Ugh! I did find a William Prie, but that morph is a little too far off. I also found a ship captain named DePriest on a ship named the "Attica," but that was in the 1800s, much too late. That's when I decided to check the records for any ship landing in Canada, and there it was: Guillaume DePres, 1651, Quebec, Canada. Wow! He came with a few siblings, including Genevieve who later married a prominent person (I'm drawing a blank on his name now) which is why her line is well documented. Now I can't help but wonder: do we follow the facts & devise a new theory? Or do we ignore this fact, because it doesn't fit in with any of our theories? I've decided to call this Canadian theory the "Canadian Theory." :)I would be happy to include the actual record with this post but have been unable to do so. However, I'm sure you can locate it on your own through ancestry.com.
Meanwhile, I'm impressed that you have family members willing & ready to hop on the next Red Eye to France for further digging. What ultimate dedication! (I've visited what was probably the old DePriest property on the Pamunkey River in 1704 and also visited St. Peter's Parish in New Kent County, but that's it for now. I certainly haven't been to France!)
BTW, a big thank you for all the work & research you have done for our family tree. What a priceless treasure of information you have given all of us descendants! I'm from patriarch Robert's second wife Mary - one of your "halfsies."
Also, thank you for your reply post. I sincerely appreciate your time! Warmest regards, Lisa DePriest :)
P.S. Here is my email address if you're interested in seeing that passenger record: [email protected]
