Greetings Derbignys

I am a life long resident -37 years- of New Orleans, Louisiana. I actually grew up one block from a Derbigny family whose grand father was a French immigrant (so, there was no blood relation). Thought that you might find this biziarre.
Anyway, what I want to share or possibly receive clarification about, is the lineage of Pierre Derbigny. As a teenager, I was told that he fathered NO sons only daughters. However, I was also told that he was a slave owner. My grand father -Arthur- and his three brothers(Lavelle; Walter--moved to Chicago; and George) were adopted by a couple that allowed them to keep the Derbigny name.....this occured around the early 1920's. For what its worth, the couple was the proprietor of Joe Louis' Cigars.
