William P. Derby, Western Massachusetts

I'm looking for further information on William P. Derby, who lived during the time of the Civil War and wrote "Bearing Arms in the Twenty-Seventh Massachusetts Regiment of Volunteer Infantry During the Civil War" (1883) and other articles regarding the war. He apparently resided in western Massachusetts. There may have been a marriage to the Lyman family, and his descendants included Albros. I'm interested in both ancestors and other descendants.
