There is a great ongoing project at www.smgf.org
It is Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation. It is free but you don't get individual results. If different male DeShanes would participate we would be able to tell if any of us shared a common ancestor. One place states: you should submit at least four to six generations of genealogy where possible. Then another place makes it sound like you must submit at least four generations, both sides.I'm sure they would answer that question for you.
At the very least it is very interesting.
Taken from web site:
Help build the SMGF database by requesting a collection kit, and sending us a DNA sample and a copy of your pedigree chart. Due to our status as a research institution, we unfortunately cannot give you information back about the results of your own genetic test, due to privacy issues. However, a DNA sample and pedigree will be included in our database so that others may find common ancestors they share with you.
Obtain a copy of your genetic markers from a commercial genetic testing lab. Commercial labs are generally not under the same privacy constraints as SMGF, and are therefore able to send you a copy of your genetic information. Using these genetic markers you can search the SMGF database for possible ancestors.
