Hi Pierre,
Nice explanation. Even though it is frustrating to be stumped by a dit name, isn't it nice that the women kept their maiden name. This more than compensates for the inconvenience of the dit thing. French Genealogy is great fun. All of my dad's ancestors came from Michigan, New York and Quebec. My Beausoleil dit name is Malboeuf.
