In Reply to: MORE Deslaurier surname spellings by Diane Arsenault of 239

I've recently started my husband's familytree,, the last name in one branch is Legault,, but as I found recorded birthdates and such on a Quebec site I soon discovered that the name was Legault dit Delaurier when they immigrated in Canada in the late 1600's and the name remained the same spelling for a few generations but then was changed to Legault. Does anyone know what the 'dit' in the surname means??

Other spellings of the last name I found were:
LEGAULT
LEGAULT dit DESLAURIERS
LAGAULT dit DES LAURIERS
LEGAUD
LE GOFF
LE GAUT

Can anyone add to these alternate spellings??
