Hi Marilyn,

We do have an August Detert in the family; however, he was born in MN in the early 1900s, and I believe is still living.
Our/My Deterts arrived in 1882 from Stettin (Prussia), and headed directly to Hammond, IN, where my ggreatgrandmother had relatives who had already emigrated. They remained there for about a year, which is where my grandfather was born, and from there moved to extreme south central Minnesota (Martin County). Our entire family was there until around 1905 or so when part of the family moved to northwest Montana. The family is now spread out over a number of states, of course, but the primary concentrations remain Minnesota and Montana, with smaller concentrations in California (where I am), and a few other states. Until about 20 years ago, I had never met a Detert I was not related to.
However, since then I have come to realize that there are quite a number of us out there with the same surname. I'm sure we are all related somewhere back in time.
To attempt to answer your question, I have heard that there is a Detert family in the Faribault, MN area that I am not related to, which could be worth investigating on your part. Faribault is located near Rochester, MN, close to the Wisconsin border. I am not aware of any other Detert families in Minnesota to which I am unrelated, although it is possible there are some.
