I have a close friend whose mother was a Detwiler. She grew up in Clifton, Virginia, which is in the Prince William County area I believe. You could find the birthplaces and parents names for your grandparents on their death certificates. This will help you get back to a time when you might be able to find your family on census records. Many of these are in book form; I know some are in the DAR Library in DC.

Many of my ancestors came from early Bucks Co., PA, and I have seen the Detwiler name when researching records in that area. The time period was the early 1700s. I am sure some of the other postings will be of help to you. I know there is a book on the family, because the sister of my friend has a copy, but I have never seen it. Someone else in the forum might be able to help you with that. Good luck!
