Hi Paul,
I'm researching the family of Gary Devan and have put together a great deal of infomation so far. Just took a trip to San Andreas in Calaveras County and found a lot more including the Tryon connection and the following: Ella Agnes Devan (Mary on 1880 census Twp. 6, Calaveras Co.)was the daughter and only child of Edward Devan and Margaret/Marguerite L. (Maggie) Fox who were married June 19, 1879 in Calaveras Co. Edward was the brother of Gary's great grandfather, William. Their father's name was Andrew and he and his brother William (whose photograph I just found in the Calaveras Hist. Soc.!) were born in Co. Tipperary, Ireland.
