Hi Cousin Ben
Chantry was the brother of Walter Howell Deverell (1827-1854)one of the Pre Raphaelite painters! No connection known to the Buckinghamshire Deverells.
Walter Howell's siblings were Spencer, Chantry,Wykeham, Ruding, Jemima, Margaretta and Maria. His father was Walter Ruding Deverell and mother Margaretta Phillips.
Grandfather Rev Robert Deverell curate at Castle Bytham near Stamford lincs. Walter Howell was born in Charlottesville, VA - 1 Oct 1827. No parish records were kept and family bible destroyed. Walter Ruding became secretary of the Statistical society until 1840 when he took up the office of Governor of the general prison at Perth for 2 years then becoming secretary-assistant to William dyce Director of the Government School of Design opened in 1837 at Somerset House.I have a photocopy of an essay on WH Deverell by Mary Lutyens based on an unpublished memoir in the Henry E Huntingdon Library San Marino CA.
