Hi Jane,
I was looking for Melksham Deverills (all spellings) because I found the birth of one Eli Deverill there that matched the birthdate for an Eli in my Deverell line. The parents would be John and Ann (Merritt) Deverell. They had at least two sons born in England. Eli was born in 1853 and William was born in 1856. It is quite possible that there was also a son named Edward. It is believed that John Deverell had died prior to the family coming to the States ca 1870. We do not know what part of England this family came from, although there seems to be a consensus in tradition that it was from Wiltshire. Eli and William worked in the woolen mills of New England after their arrival in the States. They lived in the Millbury/Sutton, Worcester Co., MA area and then relocated to Providence, RI.
