I wondered if naming patterns might provide some clues? The male names that seemed to be repeated in this family are Arthur and Francis. William, my great grandfather, named his eldest son, Roy. I know that the name did not come from his wife's family. Eli named his eldest daughter Florence Jane. His only son was named Russell Francis. Don't know if this is of any help, but maybe fits with someting you have. Thought it might be worth a mention.
