Devers Family - KY to MO
Posted by: Beverley Shackelford Date: January 19, 2001 at 08:49:27
  of 199

John Devers m. Nancy Merrit(Maret) 19 Mar 1808 in Garrard Co. KY. The family moved to MO. Nancy had a brother, Alva, who settled in Clay Co. MO about 1845-47 so it is possible that the Devers went there. They also had relatives in Chariton, DeKalb and Gentry counties in MO.
According to a Maret family story, Jim Devers, a son of John & Nancy Devers, was with the James gang, was captured by authorities when he visited relatives in KY, and was taken back to MO and hanged. I found information on the internet about a James M. Devers, believed to be a member of the James gang who was arrested in KY and brought to MO where he was lodged in th Richmond jail. On 17 Mar 1868 about 15 men removed him from the jail and hanged him. This story sounds very much like the Maret family story except based on the date, it would probably mean that he would have been a grandson rather than son of John Devers and Nancy Merrit.
If you think you have any possible connections with John Devers and Nancy Merrit/Maret, please contact me.
