Since I have seen several references to the wife of Jonathan Devol , as Hannah Audley, daughter of John of Boston. I thought I would post information from The American Genealogist Vol 65 1990, p 148.
Two Jonathan Davols of Dartmouth Mass.
"In his Gen. Dict. of RI. John Austin identifies the wife of Jonathan Davol Jr. of Dartmouth as Hannah, and mentions that she was named Extrx. in his will, dated Aug 8 1709 , pro Sep 7 1709. This is not correct. Th wife whom Jonathan "Devel" of Dartmouth named in his will was " Marah", a phonetic spelling for the local pronunciation of Mary ( Bristol Co .MA, PR 2:263) While she is also named Marah on the bond and inventory, she herself signed the bond as Mary on Sep 7 1709. It is possible that Austin misread Marah as Hanah."
"On the previous page (286) of the reprint of Austins Dict. there is a printed marginal addition to the text stating that Hannah, the wife of Jonathan Davol ( father of Jonathan in the above paragraph) was Hannah Audley ( or Odlin) born in 1643, dau of John and Margaret Audley of Boston. This too is incorrect. Hannah ( or Anna) Odlin, dau of John and Margaret, was in fact married to Jeremiah Bumstead by 1664, when John and Margaret deeded land to the Bumsteads, " for love and affection of my son Jeremiah umstead" ( Suffolk Co Mass. LR 21:230). Ruth Gray in her article, "Sarah, Mother of Jeremiah Bumstead",( NEHGR 140 (1986) ; 312), sets forth the facts indicating that Anna Bumstead died sometime between 1670 and 1674, after bearing Bumstead children until 1670, thereby eliminating the possiblity that she married Davol, then Bumstead, ( following Davol's death), insomuch as, by Austin's own account, Jonathan Davol Sr. was signing deeds as late as 1698."
These Devols are my ancestors, and I too, discovered early on the Audley/Odlin marriage, so I thought this posting might help others sort this out. Howard Boswell
