Devenish of Cuba

My Devenish ancestor was married to Thomas Shin Taylor in Madison, IN, on March 29, 1843. There is confusion about her origins, but one thing that seems clear is that she was born in Cuba around 1820. (Census records of her daughter indicate her place of birth) Her name was Rebecca Ann (or perhaps, Ann Rebecca, but she went by Rebecca).

One family legend had her as the orphan daughter of British citizens who died in Cuba. She was sent north to New England to be raised by relatives there.

Another branch of the family reports that her family was of French origins and that they came from Canada. I believe they agree that she was born in Cuba.

Thomas Shin Taylor is recorded as being from New Jersey in the 1860 census, but an old Taylor Bible indicates he was born in Scotland.

We'd love your help in untangling this mystery.
