Hi Pam:
Thanks for the reply, I got the date from Canadian census and his army papers. Prehaps I have the wrong Alfred but it doesn't appear to be that common of a name. I was able to find a lot of information on James Devonshire and he lived in the area so I had assumed he might be Alfreds brother. Thanks again for the information.
