ORIGIN OF ENGLISH "DEWIS"

Can anyone tell me whether this name was the origin of the surname Dewis which is very common in the Warwickshire town of Bedworth? The first instance of the name located in the Parish Register was 1655. Silk weaving was a common industry in the area.
