In Reply to: Need WV Dewees information by Deborah Seton-Paine of 192

Benjamin Casto Dewees was married 5 times. His third marriage was to Nancy Anne Hershman on January 8, 1857, in Jackson County. (My Line is Benjamin Casto Dewees and his second wife, Grace Casto.) Benjamin was a veteran in the 11th WV Infantry (union) in the Civil War (see my web page in the WV Civil War Site for the 11th). I have the Dewees' back into the 1500's.
Benjamin and Nancy had six children, one of whom was Christopher Columbus Dewees b. August 6, 1858 and died March 4, 1952 in Wirt County, WV and buried in Wolverton Cemetery (as was Benjamin). Christopher married twice, and his wives were sisters. First was to Columbia Jane Richards November 25, 1881. His second wife was Mary Ellen Richards, united on December 19, 1912.
Christopher Columbus Dewees and Columbia Jane Richards had the following children:
(1) Samuel T. Dewees b. June 1, 1883
....married Sarah Duvall
(2) Orville Dewees b. May 4, 1885 d. 12/13/73
....married Henrietta "Etta" Maze
....children: (1) Olive Arine Dewees b. 1915
..............(2) Sylvester C. Dewees b. 1917
..............(3) Denford Dewees b. 1928
(3) Patience J. Dewees b. March 1890
....married George Finch
(4) Mary E. Dewees b. October 1893
....married "Okie" Keener

Benjamin Casto Dewees was the son of Samuel and Edith Dewees, and the grandson of John Dewees and Mary Updegrove. John Dewees was a revolutionary soldier in Delaware, and Mary Updegrove was related to Herman Op den Graeff who sailed to America in 1683 aboard the "Concord", the German version of the "Mayflower", it being the 1st Palatines to settle in America.

I have much info on this family.
