Christopher Columbus Dewees was a veteran of the 7th West Virginia Cavalry (as was his brother, Winfield Scott Dewees) and can be seen on the WV Civil War web site for that unit. They spell it "Dedweese" because that was the way the officer incharge spelled it. I have their pension records. Both were sons of Isaac Updegrove Dewees and Mary Margaret McClain Board (her second marriage). Isaac was the son of Samuel and Edith Dewees, and was born ca. 1819. They had a large family and one of Isaac's brothers was our g. g. grandfather, Benjamin Casto Dewees (or as you would identify, an uncle to Christopher). Samuel Dewees was a son of John Dewees (the revolutionary soldier from Delaware) and Mary Updegrove. The Dewees lineage goes back to Adriaenz Hendricks de Wees born ca. 1595 in the Netherlands. Another brother of Christopher Columbus Dewees was Hamilton Taylor Dewees who married Sarah Williams in Athens County, Ohio. When Sarah was pregnant with their first child, Hamilton was killed in a railroad accident near a tunnel in New England Township, Athens County. A son was born and named Hamilton Taylor Dewees II. Sarah later married her husband's uncle (another brother of Isaac Updegrove Dewees and Benjamin Casto Dewees) named Alfred E. S. Dewees. They are buried in Old Marshfield Cemetery, Waterloo Township, Athens County, Ohio. Alfred was a veteran of the Civil War as well, fighting with the 11th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry with brothers Benjamin (mentioned previously), and Henry Spencer Dewees; and cousins Joshua Kessel Dewees and William Jabel Dewees; and nephew, Moses Parsons Jr.
I have just completed a web page for the 11th West Virginia and it will be ready soon on the WV Civil War site. Would love to have you fill me in on your family as well up to current day.
