Hi Lorraine,
I figured you meant 1820, etc.:-)
Anyway, the Martin Dewey I am looking for appears in the 1840 and 1850 US Federal Census in Wheatfield, Niagara County, NY. What I know is that my great great great grandmother, whose name was Louisa, was married to a man named Hiram Rose. Hiram was from Ellisburg, Jefferson County, NY. Hiram died before 1829, and she remarried and migrated to Niagara County in the early 1830's. Louisa Dewey appears in the 1850 US Census (listed with Martin--although the census taker spelled it "Dwey") and again in the 1855 New York State census as: Louisa Dewey, age 56, mother, born Jefferson Co., NY (listed with Lorenzo Rose's family in 1855, Town of Wheatfield). Lorenzo was Louisa and Hiram Rose's son, and presumably Martin Dewey's stepson.
So I guess the question is: could there be two Martin Deweys? Btw, the 1850 US Census for Martin and Louisa also has listed Martin's mother, a Freelove Dewey, born around 1769 in Mass.
Let me know what you think.
Best regards,
Elizabeth Rose Stanton
