Hi David,
I have a copy of John Dewhurst’s will but I do not think that it mentions the Freemason’s Arms. However it does mention that he has property in Fullwood Rents, Holborn, London.
The Records of Sun Fire Office show a John Dewhurst having properties at the following addresses:
19 April 1820 Insured: John Dewhurst, 26 Farmer Street Shadwell, gent
17 July 1820 Insured: John Dewhurst 81 Long Lane, The Freemasons Arms, victualler
1 August 1821 Insured: John Dewhurst, 1 Long Acre, victualler
Other property or occupiers: The Welsh Harp in Fullwood Street Holborn (victualler); 19 Fullwood Street (chandler)
24 September 1821 Insured: John Dewhurst 81 Long Acre victualler
There was also a John Dewhurst, who wrote “Observations on the present situation of American landed property” in 1794, Whilst living at, no.17, Norfolk Street, Strand, London. All these addresses are very close to one another
I have a direct descendant John Dewhurst (born about 1770-73) and wife Ann, living in Fullwood Rents between 1793 until about 1800 maybe later. Although he is listed as a blacksmith on his children’s christenings, he may well have gone on to own a public house and other property, but this is coincidental evidence. This John had 3 sons’ and 3 daughters’ but I cannot tie him in with Mary Linfitt and Ellen Dewhurst?? Would love to know if you have any additional information.
