I'm afraid that I am still stuck in Northamptonshire with my Dews line. I would very much like him to be from Yorkshire (I have fond memories of Leeds and surrounding areas!).
My gentleman in question is a William Dews, born 1813, place unknown. He died 16 May 1847, Woodford, Northamptonshire - aged 34 years old. He had been a shepherd, and on his son's birth cert. he was listed as a labourer.
Another online contact was able to do some look-ups for me and found that his father's name was John who died 1852, Woodford Halse, Northamptonshire, putting his birth in 1772, place unknown.
I have a copy of a printout made by Mr Marvin Ashby (alas, I do not have his new email address) that he sent me a couple of years ago. It lists 'Dews/Dewes' from 1558 to 1899 (1 entry for 1990) from the areas of Yorkshire that Mr Ashby was focussing upon. Ossett was one of those areas.
There are two 'John' Dews/Dewes on the list that might match mine, but I cannot in good conscience make that 'leap'.
I do not know if the list is complete, but there are hundreds of names on the list and if you would like me to look-up anything, I'd be happy to oblige.
