Your great-grandfather, William Robert Dewsnap, was most likely my first cousin twice removed, William R. Dewsnap. My William R. Dewsnap was born in New York about 1847. This is consistent with your 4 October 1846 date for William Robert. I have it that William R. married a Sarah S. Unknown. This Sarah is presumably your Sarah Steele Tryon. I found William R. and Sarah had at least five children: Ruth W., William R., Lillian, Harry W., and Stanley. I assume the father William R. died before 1900 because the 1900 New York Federal Census shows Sarah
S. living with only her children William R., Lillian, Harry W., and Stanley in Wallkill Township, Orange County, New York. Sarah, age 76, appeared in 1920 NY Federal Census living with Harry W. Tryon and James M. Tryon in Middletown, Orange County, New York.

In the 1850 NY Federal Census I found George Dewsnap, born 1814, to be William R.'s father. William's mother, Susan, was born about 1819 in New York. Other children were listed, also. The 1860 NY Federal Census shows George and his family in Johnstown, Fulton County, NY.

I was fortunate enough to find an obituary in the New York Times that led me across the ocean to Woodstock, Oxfordshire, England! There, further research using microfiche of baptisms, marriages and burials of early Woodstock (obtained from the Oxfordshire Family History Society), showed that William's father, George Dewsnap, was baptized 29 Sep 1814 in Woodstock.

George's parents, William's grandparents, were George Dewsnap and Mary Ann Pates. George was baptized 8 August 1783; Mary Ann was baptized 2 August 1791 in Bicester, Oxfordshire, England. William R.'s great-grandparent's were Joseph Dewsnap who died 17 August 1812 in Woodstock, and Anne Du-Bois born in England.

Other descendants of Joseph Dewsnap are listed in my FTM User Page Genealogy Report: The Descendants of Joseph Dewsnap, to be found at:

I have not found any link between my branch of the Dewsnap family and Yorkshire. Family lore has it that our Dewsnap branch came from Sheffield, but so far I have only been able to find my Dewsnap ancestors in Woodstock, Oxfordshire, England.

In addition to this GenForum contact, I may also be contacted by e-mail at to exchange any private Dewsnap family information.
