We knew about the Daniel Dewsnap who aided in the rescue of Winston Churchill during the Boer War. We tell all our friends if it wasn't for our "ancestor" Daniel, we'd all be speaking German. Do you have any information on Daniel's lineage?
Family lore says that my Dewsnap ancestors came from Sheffield. However, what we've learned so far indicates the family came from Woodstock, Oxon, England. The ancestor most likely to have a Sheffield link is Joseph Dewsnap born about 1740 and who died in Woodstock in August, 1812. Joseph married Ann Du-Bois on 5 December 1773 and fathered eleven children.
We found this information on microfiche obtained from the Oxfordshire Family History Society (baptisms, marriages, and burial records).
At least one son of Joseph and Ann, George, and four grandsons immigrated to America in 1832.
For more information on these Woodstock Dewsnaps and their descendants you may look at the FTM User Page Genealogy Report on the Descendants of Joseph Dewsnap. This report is found on the Benson Home Page at
