Ruth, Thanks for your posting to the forum it has confirmed a link with my own family tree and I am pleased to provide the following info:- From research notes my late father made, I have some details of Joseph Dewsnaps Children:- James Du Bois baptised 15th March 1774, buried 22 October 1800 at Woodstock Joseph - baptised 29th November 1776, died 27th October 1837 married to Elizabeth Little?17th May 1833? Ret died of Typhus Elizabeth baptised 15th August 1790, buried 14th May 1859 at South Strancham? Married Lieutenant Woodward (later Commander) Mark of Hammersmith, London Rebecca baptised 7th June 1797, died of Typhus at Greenwich, buried 31st December 1812 Joseph Dewsnap (your third great grand father) was the son of John Dewsnap, baptised 12th December 1717 of Crosse Cliffe, Glossop, Derbyshire and Martha Morley? They married about 1740 and Joseph was baptised 19th February 1740 or 1741 (There is uncertainty about the dates as this was the time the calendars changed). Reference is also made to John Dewsnap being in Sheffield in 1739 and 1741. It seems probable therefore that John and Martha married and Joseph was born in Sheffield. Possibly Martha was from Sheffield? They later returned to the Glossop area and there is a note that John was Churchwarden at Mottram Parish Church from 1755. His occupation is noted as Buttonmaker. He died 9th May 1777 in Glossop. John Dewsnap and Martha Morley also had 9 other children:- William possibly also born in Sheffield George occupation cutler (a Sheffield trade) married Maria? of London? Peter occupation Cutler, of Sheffield? John died in Ghent, Belgium? Esther married Mr.Price (possible name connection to Josephs child Pryse?) Mary married Robert Short Deborah married in Southampton, England? Elizabeth baptised 7th June 1756, married a Mr.Jones John was the son of Robert Dewsnap(pe) and Mary Dearnelley who married on 15th December 1715 in Glossop Parish Church, Derbyshire. Robert is noted as being of Cowbrook, Glossop and Mary of West Huddersfield, Yorkshire. Robert was buried on 23rd September 1773 Robert Dewsnap and Mary Dearnelley also had 5 other children:- Mary baptised 11th July 1716 of Crosse Cliffe, Glossop, married Thomas Goulding of Cheshire Peter baptised 12th October 1720, buried 23rd February 1768 in Sheffield , married Christian Fox Joshua baptised 30th June 1722 of Whitfield, Glossop. Died 26th February 1787, married Sarah Norton of Upper Denby, Yorkshire occupation Silversmith Robert married Elizabeth Booth of Holmfirth, Yorkshire William (My Fifth Great Grand father) born about 1723, occupation Grinder (a Sheffield Trade) Whilst much of the Glossop information I have copied from transcripts of the Parish Registers myself, I am hoping to personally verify the source of my fathers notes on the remainder. I have accumulated a number of other branches of the Dewsnap family tree from Robert Dewsnappe downwards and I hope to create a Web page in due course, in the meantime Ill be happy to check what information I have if anyone has a query. Roger Dewsnap
