Your note came as a great help to me as I had been unable to find the Daniel Dewsnap as I didn't know he was John Daniel.
I don't know if this helps but I came across this record in the CRI

Dewsnap, John Daniel
Year: 1893 Quarter: June
Record Type: Marriages Volume: 8d
District: Ashton under Lyne Page: 713

Do you think this is your man getting married? The date fits in quite well with Ethel's birth date.

Please let me know if you make progress as my family's folklore is that Daniel is a GR Gr Uncle or similar but I have never been able to find him or links to him. We have a ring that allegedly came from Daniel that he got in South Africa, but again I don't know if there is any truth in this
