Phillip, I need to apologize for not responding sooner to your post on Joseph Dewsnap, born 1776 in Woodstock. My wife, Ruth Dewsnap Benson, and myself have no excuse for this delay. Your Joseph Dewsnap must certainly be the Joseph Dewsnap who was the brother of my wife's ancestor George Dewsnap. George and his wife Mary Ann immigrated to the US about 1832 with three of their children: Mark, John and James. We have it that the father of your Joseph Dewsnap was Joseph Dewsnap, born abt 1740 in England, died Aug 1817 in Woodstock, England, married to Ann Du-Bois. We have the following information which may be about the Joseph Dewsnap who was born in 1776: Three Woodstock glovers were convicted for evading payment of Stamp Duty: Richard Cross, Joseph Dewsnapp (earlier spelling of Dewsnap), and Knapp Money. All three families and their descendants were to be engaged in gloving for some years. George Dewsnap was listed in Pigot's Directory in 1830 as a glover. Henry Cross was a glover until 1844, and remarkably, a member of the Knapp Money family was a glover until 1931. (Source: "Glovemaking in West Oxfordshire" by N.L. Leyland, FHC SLC 942.57H25oc) The booklet goes on to note that the postwar depression of the 1820's hit particularly badly those gloving centers such as Woodstock where there was no alternative employment. In 1826, under the influence of Adam Smith's financial teaching, the president of the Board of Trade removed the centuries old restrictions on the import of foreign gloves. The Woodstock Index of Burials shows a Joseph Dewsnap, age 72, died in 1812. The Land Tax Records of New Woodstock shows a "late Dewsnap" in 1813. This may be the Joseph Dewsnap born about 1740.
