Linda
I have been able to finish my research - it seems that we are quite closly related.
I have been able to find the marriage certificate of Frederick William Berry to Alice Maud Diaper. Alice was sister to both Ada (my great grandmother) and Eliza Jane.
Frederick and Alice maud got married in 1893 on the 19th July in St Paul's Church, Hammersmith, London (all the girls got married in this church - the tradition continued and even my mother was married here)
Frederick was a labourer when he got married and was 21 years old; Alice Maud was 20. Frederick's father was James Berry and his profession was a plasterer - Alice's father was George James Diaper (who was to drown in the Thames whilst swimming a race across it at Hammersmith Bridge) and he was a bricklayer.
It seem that after the death of the father the whole family took off to Canada - all the girls and their husbands - and their mother Ada Diaper. It seems that it was an extended family that went, as my great grandmother (Ada, Alice Maud's sister, and her husband Henry Hutt, and their children all went too) I am not sure when they left but they were here for the 1901 census.
I hope this gets to you as the last time you posted was in 2003 - but it would be great to get into contact and share info - as I have some Diaper information and can research it much easier from the UK. Hopefully you can tell me more about the Canada link.
The women in the family were working as laundresses after the death of George to make ends meet - and I heard that they had set up a laundry business in Toronto when they arrived.
My great grandmother and her husband and sons came back to England between the first and second world wars.
Hope to hear from you
